How Long Does It Take to Recover From Blepharoplasty?
Most people begin feeling comfortable returning to normal daily routines within 5–7 days after blepharoplasty. Bruising and swelling are usually most noticeable during the first week and begin improving over the following one to two weeks.
Although the initial recovery phase passes relatively quickly, mild swelling and continued healing of the incision lines may persist for several weeks as the final results gradually become more visible.
Blepharoplasty Recovery Timeline and What to Expect
Although everyone heals at a slightly different pace, most people experience a predictable recovery timeline following eyelid surgery.
First 48 Hours
During the first two days after surgery, swelling and mild bruising typically begin to appear around the eyes. Pain is mild. You may be advised to:
- Rest and keep your head elevated
- Apply a cold compress periodically to help minimize swelling
- Use lubricating eye drops to keep the ocular surface comfortable
Some temporary dryness or irritation of the eyes may occur during this time.
Days 3–7
Swelling and bruising often peak during the first week before gradually improving. Most people are able to resume light activities toward the end of the first week, although strenuous exercise should still be avoided while healing tissues continue to recover.
Around day seven you will return to the office to have your sutures removed.
Weeks 2–3
By the second or third week, visible bruising typically fades significantly and swelling continues to improve. Many patients feel comfortable returning to work and normal social activities during this stage.
Makeup can often be used to conceal any remaining discoloration once the surgeon confirms that the incision areas have healed appropriately.
Weeks 4–6
During the following weeks, incision lines soften and swelling gradually resolves. At this stage, most patients feel fully recovered and able to return to their usual routines without restrictions.
Although the majority of healing occurs within the first month, subtle improvements may continue as tissues settle and refine the final result for up to 6 months.
Factors That Affect Your Recovery
Because each procedure is tailored to the patient, recovery timelines may vary slightly from person to person. Several factors can influence how quickly you heal after eyelid surgery:
- Whether upper blepharoplasty, lower blepharoplasty, or both procedures were performed
- The amount of excess skin or fatty tissue removed
- Individual healing characteristics and skin quality
- Whether post-operative care and post-surgery instructions are followed carefully
- Smoking or other lifestyle factors that may slow healing

FAQs
How long does it take for blepharoplasty to look normal?
Most patients feel comfortable appearing in public within 10–14 days as bruising and swelling improve. Subtle swelling may continue to resolve over several weeks, and the final refined appearance of the eyelids typically develops over one to three months.
How painful is blepharoplasty recovery?
Blepharoplasty recovery is usually associated with mild discomfort rather than significant pain. Most patients manage any soreness with prescribed pain medication or over‑the‑counter options recommended by their surgeon.
What can you not do after blepharoplasty?
During the early recovery period, patients should avoid strenuous exercise, heavy lifting, bending, and activities that increase blood pressure around the eyes. Your surgeon may also advise limiting screen time, avoiding contact lenses temporarily, and protecting the eyes from sun exposure while healing.
Which heals faster, upper or lower blepharoplasty?
Upper eyelid surgery typically heals slightly faster than lower blepharoplasty because it often involves less swelling and tissue manipulation. However, recovery time varies depending on the individual procedure and how each patient heals.
