Blepharoplasty (Eyelid Surgery)

Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, improves the appearance of the eyes by correcting drooping upper lids and under-eye bags that can make you look tired or older than you feel.

What Is Blepharoplasty?

Blepharoplasty is a cosmetic procedure that removes or repositions excess skin and fat from the upper lids and lower lids.

Over time, age, genetics, and environmental factors can cause the eyelid skin to lose elasticity, leading to puffiness or sagging. Blepharoplasty restores natural contour and definition to the eyes, creating a refreshed, balanced appearance.

You may be a good candidate for eyelid rejuvenation if you want to:

  • Lift sagging upper eyelids that interfere with vision or makeup application.
  • Reduce puffiness or “bags” beneath the eyes with lower eyelid blepharoplasty.
  • Improve a tired appearance and achieve a brighter, more rested facial look.

Our Approach to Eyelid Surgery

Blepharoplasty is performed by Dr. Epstein, an oral and facial surgeon with advanced training in craniofacial and cosmetic procedures, known for meticulous technique and natural-looking results.

  • Advanced Techniques: Each surgery is precisely planned to preserve your natural eye shape while smoothing and tightening the surrounding tissue. Incisions are carefully placed along natural creases to minimize visible scarring.
  • Patient Comfort & Safety: Blepharoplasty is performed on an outpatient basis under general anesthesia to ensure you are fully asleep and comfortable throughout the procedure.
  • Expert Care: With expertise in both reconstructive and aesthetic facial surgery, Dr. Epstein delivers results that appear refreshed, not altered.

Eyelid Surgery Recovery Timeline

Eyelid surgery recovery is typically smooth and predictable, with most patients resuming normal activities within two weeks. Mild bruising, swelling, and temporary blurry vision are expected early on but fade quickly as your body heals.

To help you plan, here’s what a typical eyelid surgery recovery timeline looks like:

  • Days 1–2: Keep your eyes dry and rest as much as possible. It is normal to have mild swelling, bruising, or a tight feeling around the upper and lower lids. Cold compresses can help minimize puffiness.
  • Days 3–7: You may begin gently cleansing your eyes with mild soap and water, taking care not to disturb any sutures or scabs. Most patients notice visible improvement in swelling by the end of the first week.
  • Day 7: Sutures are removed in the office. At this point, most patients feel comfortable returning to light daily activities. Bruising is typically gone or minimal. You can safely return to work, exercise, and makeup use as long as the area has healed properly.
  • Weeks 6–8: Final results continue to refine as the skin fully heals and any residual swelling fades. The eyelids look smoother, firmer, and more refreshed, revealing a natural, rejuvenated appearance. After this point we assess the needs for laser resurfacing.

Throughout your recovery, our team remains available to answer questions and monitor your progress. Following all aftercare instructions and attending follow-up appointments will help ensure a comfortable and successful eyelid surgery recovery experience.

What to Expect

Knowing what to expect helps you feel confident and prepared before your procedure. Our team focuses on clear communication and attentive care to make the experience as smooth and comfortable as possible.

Consultation and Evaluation

Your visit begins with a comprehensive evaluation of your eyelids and discussion of your aesthetic goals. Dr. Epstein will recommend whether upper, lower, or combined blepharoplasty is best for your needs and review expected results.

Day of Surgery

The procedure takes about one to two hours and is performed comfortably in our Seattle office. Once you are fully asleep under general anesthesia, precise incisions are made along natural eyelid folds. Excess skin and fat are gently removed or repositioned to achieve smooth, youthful contours.

Recovery and Results

Most swelling and bruising subsides within the first week. You will notice visible improvement soon after surgery, with final results continuing to refine over six to eight weeks as tissues heal completely.
